The new look for suburban homes? What we’re seeing more of in NJ siding projects.

Hey folks—posting from the perspective of a home exterior company in Northern NJ. We’ve done a lot of traditional vinyl and fiber cement siding jobs over the years, but lately there’s been a noticeable shift in what homeowners are asking for—and we thought it was worth sharing for anyone thinking about a renovation.

Modern, commercial-inspired siding styles are moving into residential spaces.

We’re seeing more requests for products like architectural wall panels (think clean lines, contemporary textures, and wood-look finishes like Nichiha). These were originally more common in urban areas or commercial projects—restaurants, offices, that kind of thing—but they’re showing up more in suburban neighborhoods now too.

Why the change?

  • Homeowners want to stand out. With housing inventory tight, many are staying put and choosing to update instead. Unique siding styles help make a house feel new again.
  • Pinterest + Instagram inspiration. Social media is pushing design boundaries. We often get reference photos from modern homes in California or Seattle—and homeowners want to bring that look east.
  • Not just about looks. Products like fiber cement or composite panels also perform well in harsh climates (like NJ’s mix of rain, snow, heat, and humidity).

A couple things to know if you’re exploring modern siding:

  • Some of these styles require more planning. Not every contractor installs them often, and detailing matters.
  • Budget is a factor. Materials like James Hardie or Nichiha cost more than standard vinyl, but the long-term durability and curb appeal can be worth it.

Don’t forget about trim. Modern siding designs need clean, intentional trim work to look right. We use a lot of AZEK (now part of James Hardie) for this.

If you’re mid-renovation or just planning ahead, it’s worth exploring what’s out there beyond the standard clapboard. Happy to answer questions if you’re curious about the process or what these styles are really like to live with.

Quality. Trust. Peace of Mind.
