We’re a home exterior company based in Montville, New Jersey, and after years of replacing siding on homes across the state, we’ve noticed the same few surprises come up for homeowners again and again. Thought I’d share what we see most often so you can plan smarter and avoid some stress.
1. Your existing siding usually hides more than you think. It’s not uncommon for us to pull off old panels and find moisture damage, warped sheathing, or even pest issues underneath. If your siding is 15+ years old, expect at least some repairs before new material can go on.
2. Siding isn’t just about looks, it’s your home’s armor. In NJ, we deal with heavy rain, wind, and humidity. Your siding system (including house wrap and insulation) plays a huge role in energy efficiency and preventing water intrusion. Cheaper material may look good up front but often costs more in repairs long term.
3. The color and finish you pick matters more than you’d think. We see homeowners underestimate how much sun exposure fades certain colors. Some darker shades can start showing wear faster in high UV areas so make sure to ask your installer about fade warranties.
4. Trim and flashing are just as important as panels. The siding might look great, but if the trim or flashing isn’t installed properly around windows and doors, water will find its way in. This is one of the biggest contributors to hidden rot and leaks.
5. Get multiple bids, but focus on scope, not just price. Two quotes that look similar on cost can have very different details on what’s included. Always compare line items, removal, sheathing repairs, wrap, cleanup, warranty, etc.
